CMYK Color Model

The CMYK color model is a subtractive color model in which cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks are combined in various ways to create a wide range of colors. This model is used in color printing, particularly in the four-color printing process.

HSL Color Model

The HSL color model is a cylindrical-coordinate representation of colors that is more intuitive for human perception. It comprises three components: hue, saturation, and lightness. This model is often used in image editing software to provide a more user-friendly approach to color manipulation.

Personally I prefer the HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color model. I find it easier to work with than RGB, which tends to be more commonly used, since it allows me to adjust the color and brightness of an image more intuitively.

Here is a color picker that uses the HSL color model. You can use it to select a color and see the values change. This color picker also allows you to adjust the Alpha (transparency) value of the color.

The Differce Between RGB and RYB

In contrast, subtractive mixing, as seen in printing, involves mixing pigments to absorb certain wavelengths of light, resulting in the perception of color.

This is why when you mix all the colors of paint together, you get black (or dark grey depending upon the colours and ratios used).

On the computer we use the RGB color model, but when we print images we use the CMYK color model. This is because the CMYK color model is better suited for printing on paper, as it uses cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks (the K refers to black, it could be B but that’s already used for Blue) to create a wide range of colors.

Since we are working with computers, and editing photos, we will use subtractive colours and the RGB color model.
